We’re hiring: Postdoctoral Researcher in quantum many-body theory & computation

Physical Sciences Complex at University of Maryland

The National Quantum Laboratory (QLab) at the University of Maryland (UMD) in College Park invites applications for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct cutting-edge research at the interface of quantum computation and condensed matter theory. Research topics include practical quantum simulation and computation, phase transitions and nonequilibrium dynamics in strongly-correlated and open quantum many-body systems, as well as advanced numerical simulation techniques with a focus on tensor network state methods.

The research will be supervised by Professors Thomas Barthel and Norbert Linke. QLab is a user facility supporting the global community of quantum researchers, educators, and entrepreneurs with access to state-of-the-art quantum computing resources and expertise. There will be plenty of opportunities to leverage these resources and to interact and collaborate with QLab fellows, users, students, and interns as well as the wider UMD quantum community including the Joint Quantum Institute (JQI), Joint Center for Quantum Information and Computer Science (QuICS), and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Before onboarding, the candidate should hold a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a closely-related field. The application should include

  • a brief cover letter (max. 1 page),
  • a comprehensive CV including a full list of publications,
  • a research statement that describes past research experience and important results, technical competencies, and preferences or ideas for future research (roughly 2-4 pages),
  • relevant academic certificates and grades, and
  • a minimum of two letters of recommendation to be send to qlab-outreach@umd.edu by the letter writers with subject line "[QLab postdoc JR103226] reference letter <applicant name>"

Screening of applications will start immediately. For full consideration, submit your materials by March 6, 2026. Applications will be considered until the position is filled.
