Global User Program
The QLab supports open science through the Global User Program (GUP). The GUP is open to US- and non-US-based researchers and research organizations needing large allocations of quantum compute time and supporting resources to pursue practical quantum computing applications in science and engineering. QLab encourages both high-risk, high-reward projects that have the potential to open new vistas of possible applications and those that will significantly progress the incremental development of tools for known applications.
QLab can support a wide range of project types across any domain of knowledge. However, QLap particularly encourages GUP applicants to propose projects that feature:
- Co-design collaborations between quantum and domain experts;
- Collaborations with researchers from UMD or other institutions in the Mid-Atlantic Quantum Alliance;
- Applications targeting major societal or planetary issues, e.g. UMD's Grand Challenge topic areas, the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, etc.
Requirements & Limitations
See GUP RFP on the QLab User Portal for current requirements, but please note:
- The GUP does NOT support proprietary use of QLab resources. See Users page for information on other mechanisms for accessing the QLab that can support proprietary use.
- Applicants must be able to participate in at least one in-person meeting in College Park, Maryland, United States. Please note that the QLab does NOT provide awardee labor or travel support; applicants will be responsible for costs and arrangements of travel, visas, etc.
- QLab considers requests regardless of funding source supporting the user(s), however proposed project team members, institutions, and funding sources must NOT be subject to U.S. sanctions.
